Original Japanese Art 1890 in Ink Sent to a Famous Artist This postcard was sent to Maeda Yoshihiko (前田吉彦, 1849–1904), one of the founders of Western-style painting during the Meiji period. Our blog on this artist is at: https://maeda-yoshihiko.blogspot.com/ This New Year’s card from 1890 (January 1, Meiji 23) was sent from Osaka by an unknown artist. The artwork depicts a smiling man riding a stately horse, holding a rising sun flag, with a castle in the background. The simplicity of the drawing enhances its impact. Since 1890 was the Year of the Horse, the gallant horse in the artwork likely carries symbolic significance. Upon closer inspection, there are some characters on the man’s clothing, and what appears to be the artist’s signature just below the castle. These characters are not clearly legible. Therefore, the sender of this artistic postcard remains unknown, and we are not able to read the message.
